Mevers School of Excellence to Hold Groundbreaking Ceremony

GOOSE CREEK, SC (March 16, 2017) – Mevers School of Excellence will hold its groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 3 p.m. The event will be held at the school site located at 7750 Henry E. Brown Blvd. in Goose Creek. Local dignitaries and Berkeley Charter Education Association members will attend along with the president of Charter Schools USA, Jonathan Hage. Governor Henry McMaster and Senator Larry Grooms are confirmed to give remarks. Representatives from the Public Charter School Alliance, Berkeley County Government, Berkeley County School District, the City of Hanahan, South Carolina legislature, US Senate, the South Carolina Public Charter School District and City of Goose Creek have confirmed attendance.

The new 69,212-square-foot school will ultimately house 1,145 students in grades K-8. Additionally, an 8,871-square-foot gymnasium will be located on the 10-acre campus. The building will include 49 classrooms, a multi-purpose room, two art, science, computer and music rooms, an exterior playfield and an exterior tot lot. The school has received more than 900 applications and will soon hold a lottery.

The Berkeley Charter Education Association, Inc. is a non-profit organization established for the sole purpose of operating public charter schools in the State of South Carolina, and to provide a K-8 education that places each student on the path to academic proficiency and college readiness.

Mevers School of Excellence is the association’s first school and is currently under construction. It is scheduled to open in the fall of 2017. This school is the vision of Sonny Mevers, a lifelong resident of Charleston, whose desire is to start a school that will prepare students for college and careers, and provide them with the knowledge and skills needed to be leaders and professionals capable of utilizing advanced technologies, across all types of businesses and industries for future generations.
